The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Scholarship is intended to assist the study of students who are interested in the human, internal work of leadership.

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship necessitates a dedication to self-development, an openness to learning from diversity and differences, and a willingness to investigate and embrace complexity.

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship provides comprehensive funding for the core fees involved with your education. It pays the cost of a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any discipline at a South African institution of higher education. This includes tuition and registration costs, study materials, research, and medical aid allowances, lodging and food, a personal allowance, and economy class transport to and from your home country to your South African university at the start and completion of your degree. You will also have a personal allowance.

The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship will support your degree for a maximum of two years, without exception.


Students who win the Scholarship for an Honours degree receive one year of assistance, while Masters students receive one or two years.
Scholarship benefits include tuition and registration expenses as determined by the university or institution.
A study materials allowance established by the MRF.


Accommodation and meal allowances established by the MRF
A medical aid allowance determined by the MRF.


A personal allowance determined by the MRF.


Research and conference grants might be made available on request.
International scholars can fly economy class from their home countries to their institutions at the start and completion of their studies.

Eligibility for Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, South Africa, 2024

  • Be between the ages of 19 and 29
  • A citizen of any African country
  • Possess a first degree with above-average academic grades (70% or upper second).
  • You have assumed leadership and had an impact on your college or community.
  • The scholarship requires attendance at the residential seminars and regional pods. Participating in the Mentoring Programme is entirely optional.

You must submit your application online. To access your application and upload documents and essays, log into our applications platform. The three people who wrote your recommendation letters must also join in to the platform and upload their letters immediately. You must allow them ample time to write their letters, sign up on the site, and post them. Your application will not be evaluated unless you provide the letters.

Documents That Are Required:

  • Recommendation Letters: Your recommenders must send their letters using our application portal. You will be unable to submit your application until you include these letters. 
  • Documentation: You must upload certificate of completion for your degrees, transcripts of your academic accomplishments, and scans of your ID and passport documents.
  • Essays: You will be required to submit two short essays, one on your own experience and one on a specific subject related to our beliefs.
  • Application for University On your application, you will be asked to indicate your desired course of study.
  • South African Qualification Agency Certificate: non-South African applicants must assess their degree’s equivalency with a South African degree. SAQA accreditation typically takes 4-8 weeks.
